Existing Portrayals of Estella

BBC - Great Expectations:
After watching the BBC's adaptation of Great Expectations and reading the description of Estella in the book, I found this version more how I imagined her as she is cold hearted and is not afraid of being mean. In this first image Estella looks like she is a mean girl just by the way she is posing as well as the facial expression she has. Estella's hair is very traditional with the middle parting and the rest of the hair put back into a bun and the fact that the sides sweep back into the bun.

Later on in Great Expectations, when Estella goes off to study abroad in Paris. On her return back to England she has grown up, but still has her cold hearted traits just like Miss Havisham wanted. Estella does not wear much makeup as she is from an upper class and women who wore it were seen as prostitutes.

Mike Newell's Great Expectations:
Whilst watching this version I didn't enjoy it as much as the BBC one as I didn't feel like description of Estella in the book was the same as I saw in the film. Although she was still a cold hearted little girl, I didn't think it came through enough. Her hair at the start of the film when she was a little girl is fairly simple, it still has the traditional middle parting, however the rest of the hair is just left curly, in which I understand where the person come came up with the idea for her as Miss Havisham is her adoptive mother and she can hardly look after herself meaning that Estella would not have elaborate updos and was left fairly plain.

Later on in the film, Estella's hair styles become more elaborate as make up for the upper class was seen as a bad thing, so the only way they could decorate themselves in anyway was in either clothes or hairstyles and hats. With the image below and the hairstyle in it, it has aspects from the start of the Victorian era, as the front of the hair is in tight curls that are above the cheeks and this indicates that
it was at the start the of Victorian era, and with the bun at the back it is high up and looks like an apollo knot/ bun which is at the end of the Georgian era and at this part of the film they in the latter part of the Victorian era.
